Using the model, we can now see how consumption has changed over time.

Until 1950, extraction mass was very small, about 0.02 hectare. The majority of people were effectively living off the land. By the 1960s, the extraction mass had increased to 2.5 hectares and has stayed there ever since. I estimate that since 1900, we've multiplied our consumption by a factor of more than 179.
