Ecological Costs
Using Mathis Wackernagel's household footprint calculator for 2000 and my projections of footprint, capacity, and inflation with no change in consumption patterns or population growth, I estimate that in 2008:
- The average cost incurred by Nature to process a pound of what a U.S. citizen consumes is $3, at around 1,000 pounds per hectare
- The average cost per hectare is about $770
If applied to the entire world:
- Nature is only capable of processing an average of 4 pounds per day per person globally
- The average person is annually consuming more than1,000 pounds more than Nature can process ("ecological debt"), amounting to a cost of $7T
- The cumulative ecological debt since 1984 is more than $65T
- By 2009, the cumulative ecological debt will equal the GWP; by 2034, it will be more than double the GWP
