My personal motivation for studying population and consumption goes further than basic curiosity. It stems from values I've developed over nearly 20 years, both intellectually and emotionally. In essence, life is the most valuable part of the Universe, therefore that which maximizes both its quantity and quality over the longest timeframe is good, and anything which diminishes its quantity, quality, and longevity is bad.

These values frame the real question I'm trying to answer: How do we maximize the quantity and quality of life? To answer this question is to enable me to logically derive what I as an individual can do to have a net positive affect on the world.
